A Creative Journey to the Reefs of Aqaba

Under the patronage of H.R.H. Princess Wijdan Al Hashemi, the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts is bringing you a one-of-a-kind exhibition. Voices of the Reef – Season 1 brings together 92 stunning works of art, including paintings, illustrations, digital, and video art—created by Jordanian and Swiss artists who ventured into Aqaba’s vibrant coral reefs.

🐠 From Underwater to Canvas: The Artists' Story

In May 2024, artists dove into the crystal-clear waters of Aqaba, the home of the “Reefs of Hope”, to witness firsthand the magic and fragility of coral life. Their experience? Breathtaking. Their mission? To raise awareness about the environmental impact of climate change on this precious ecosystem.

The exhibition highlights art as a tool for environmental action, with every brushstroke and frame echoing the urgent need to protect these underwater treasures.

The Art Meets Science: A Collaboration Across Borders

This exhibition is not just about art—it's about science, storytelling, and community. It’s a collaboration between ASEZA, the Embassy of Switzerland in Jordan, and EPFL’s Transnational Red Sea Center, who are all committed to preserving the fragile reefs. Voices of the Reef originally debuted at Aqaba Fortress, drawing over 12,000 visitors—and now, it’s heading to Amman!

What to Expect

  • 92 pieces of original artwork from both Jordanian and Swiss artists

  • Guided tours in French led by Maeva Rubli, Swiss artist, and Samuel Gardaz, the project coordinator

  • A powerful message about the fragility of coral reefs and the need to protect them

The exhibition is not just a display—it’s a movement. Through art, this project aims to amplify the voices of those who are working to protect our seas and highlight the urgency of environmental preservation. As Dr. Khalid Khreis, Director General of the Jordan National Gallery, puts it:

“Art has the power to amplify environmental awareness—this exhibition is a call to action.”
